John MacArthur stressed the importance of hymns once when he said how hymns are dripping with doctrine. Well, he didn't quite used those words but that's how I took it. I began to understand the difference between an emotional feeling and a good old fashioned hymn. I remember a handful of hymns growing up. I recall the melodies and certain folks in the church that would catch my eye during the music. But I never really understood the words until after I was saved.
Fast forward 40 years and thank God, I finally understand the words. I no longer care for the songs that I once used to "pick me up", but I enjoy the hymns as never before.
There was a time when I wanted the song played at my funeral to be Poison's "Nothing But A Good Time", but now I want the "Old Rugged Cross." I thank God for so many things but also for giving me time to grow old. His patience with my rebellious nature has allowed me to see and appreciate His Grace. And I can never give Him enough thanks for that precious gift.
Hymns are instrumental in learning correct biblical doctrine. They are beautiful and truly give praises to God.
There are songs out there that aren't hymns but praise our Lord such as Kris Kristofferson's song titled; "Why Me Lord." Check out the lyrics;
Why me Lord, what have I ever done To deserve even one Of the pleasures I've known Tell me Lord, what did I ever do That was worth loving You Or the kindness You've shown
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it So help me Jesus, I know what I am Now that I know that I've needed you So Help me Jesus, my soul's in Your hand
Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way I can try to repay All I've taken from You Maybe Lord, I can show someone else What I've been through myself On my way back to You
Lord, help me Jesus, I've wasted it So Help me Jesus, I know what I am Now that I know that I've needed you So help me Jesus, my soul's in Your hand
Lord, help me Jesus, I've wasted it So Help me Jesus, I know what I am Now that I know that I've needed you So help me Jesus, my soul's in Your hand
Jesus, my soul's in Your hand
I've no doubt Mr. Kristofferson was touched and inspired to write this wonderful song.
Another favorite is Josh Turner's; "Long Black Train" which isn't a hymn but I believe it's definitely inspired.
I would like to share links to mine and my wife's favorite hymns both sung by Mr. Alan Jackson. "In The Garden" is Rebecca's and as I mentioned earlier, "The Old Rugged Cross" is mine.
And to finally close this blog, here is another rendition of "The Old Rugged Cross" sung at our church today. Sunday April 2, 2023.
You got to check out the pipes on our Pastor. Enjoy and God Bless.
